Chatham Borough is a quiet, carefully developed, residential community located in north-central New Jersey. Chatham was named “One of the Top Ten Places to Live in the United States” by “Money Magazine" in 2005. Located 25 miles west of New York City on the eastern edge of Morris County. Chatham Borough and Chatham Township share a common heritage and both are often referred to by their shared name, Chatham or The Chathams.

 

There are excellent shopping boutiques and restaurants along Chatham's Main Street, and nearby in downtown Madison and Summit. You will find your big department stores or designer labels only 5 minutes away at the Short Hills Mall. Out of the center of town along Shunpike Road is where you will find the Hickory Tree Shopping Center and Chatham Mall, with a variety of stores and supermarkets that cater for those everyday essentials.

 

New Jersey Transit stops at the Chatham station to provide commuter service on the Morristown Line, with trains heading to the Hoboken Terminal and to Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan.
 

NJ Transit local bus service is provided on the MCM3 and runs through Chatham between Livingston Mall, Short Hills Mall, Madison, Morristown, Morris Plains and Greystone Park.

 

Chatham's school district is considered one of the best in the state, along with being one of the top public schools in the nation.
 

Chatham has 4 elementary schools – Milton Avenue, Southern Boulevard, Washington Avenue, and Lafayette School and Chatham Middle School. 
 

Chatham High School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education, the highest award an American school can receive.
 

New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Chatham High School as the 10th best high school in New Jersey in its 2008 rankings of the "Top Public High Schools" in New Jersey.

 

Chatham offers many outdoor spaces including the Great Swamp National Wildlife Preserve in Chatham Township and the Jockey Hollow and Morristown National Historical Parks.
 

The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is one of the largest National Wildlife Refuges ever created so close to an urban center. the Great Swamp is not entirely swampland but rather a mixture of marshes, meadows, dry woods and brush-covered swamps. It is the intermingling of these four habitats that gives the Great Swamp its unique character, allowing the swamp to support a wide variety of plant and animal life. The refuge is a resting and feeding area for more than 244 species of birds. Fox, deer, muskrat, turtles, fish, frogs and a wide variety of wildflowers and plants also call the refuge home.  Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center is where visitors can visit and learn more.
 

Also in Chatham is the Passaic River Country Park and Reservation. A total of 769 acres including more than 5,000 ft. of shoreline is open for leisurely hiking, picnicking, softball, fishing, ice skating and cross country skiing.
